Published on the occasion of the exhibition ªûlvaro Siza in/disciplineª¡ at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, this book brings together a large selection of Sizaª¡s drawings, sketches and personal annotations produced during the conception, construction or completion of the thirty projects featured in the exhibition together with the input from several contributors including architects, curators, critics and photographers ª¤ who have written about Sizaª¡s architecture, portrayed his work, or found personal meaning in it.
The exhibition traces ûlvaro Sizaª¡s design process through the presentation of thirty projects, built and unbuilt, spanning more than six decades, from his first works in Matonsinhos ª¤ the Four Dwellings in Matosinhos, the Boa Nova Tea House and the Ocean Swimming Pool in Leûáa da Palmeira, Portugal ª¤ to recently completed work and projects under construction, including the Mimesis Museum in South Korea, the Church in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande (France) and the Residential Tower in New York.
Three newly-commissioned essays and statements by major figures of the contemporary architecture scene internationally will examine specific projects and different aspects of a creative mind which simultaneously questions and operates within the boundaries of the discipline.
