Norwegian entrepreneur Christen Sveaas's collection of modern and contemporary Norwegian and international art includes work by Harald Sohlberg, Thorvald Hellesen, Howard Hodgkin, Yayoi Kusama, Marc Quinn, Lynda Benglis, Hannah Ryggen, Martin Creed and Edvard Munch. Whitechapel Gallery will display the highlights of this collection in four parts, from 2021-22.
The first display in the series with be selected by Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad. Choosing works from the Collection which thematically touch on night-time, she takes inspiration from the poem ?Night Mail? by W.H. Auden, which accompanied a 1936 documentary made by the General Post Office about the night mail train. The publication includes a conversation with the artist, plus full colour reproductions of works by Edvard Munch, Anna Eva Bergman, Louise Bourgeois, Martin Kippenberger and Theaster Gates.
